Summary

The Area Medical Director (AMD) is the senior physician leader overseeing Curana Health physicians across Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Indiana. This role blends hands-on clinical practice with leadership responsibilities focused on quality, growth, and physician engagement. The AMD partners closely in a dyad with the Director of Clinical Operations (DCO) and reports to the Regional Medical Director (RMD).

 

Quarterly regional travel is expected to support physician rounding, facility relationships, and leadership visibility.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide direct patient care across assigned facilities, including history and physicals, ongoing rounding, and complex case management.
  • Serve as the clinical point of escalation for physicians regarding high-risk patients, care transitions, and challenging clinical scenarios.
  • Drive quality performance and care-gap closure across the region.
  • Maintain compliance with all medical standards, best practices, and licensure expectations.

Administrative & Leadership Functions

  • Align clinical and operational goals in close partnership with the Director of Clinical Operations (DCO).
  • Lead and support regional quality initiatives to meet or exceed organizational benchmarks.
  • Build strong relationships with senior living and skilled nursing operators across the region.
  • Support rollout of clinical programs, pilots, and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide regular updates to the Regional Medical Director (RMD) on outcomes, physician engagement, and regional growth.

Physician Engagement & Development

  • Promote clinical excellence, teamwork, and alignment to Curana’s mission and values.
  • Monitor turnover and retention trends; develop solutions to support physician satisfaction.
  • Lead physician onboarding and development, including mentoring and performance coaching.
  • Participate in physician hiring and evaluation for the region.

Quarterly travel is required to support physician engagement, facility relationships, and leadership visibility across MN/OH/WI/IN.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO); board-certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatrics, or a related specialty.
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in the state of practice; DEA certification as required.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical practice experience, ideally in post-acute, senior health, or primary care.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in clinical oversight, quality improvement, or medical group management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across clinical and operational teams. 

This role requires travel to and from one or more assigned facilities. Depending on the amount of travel required, Curana may in future determine that a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and an acceptable driving record are required. If so, you will be provided with thirty (30) days notice of this requirement.
